Erewhon is a Southern California based, high-end supermarket with organic produce, clean foods with a delectable prepared deli sections.
Erewhon’s mission, as stated on its Website, is “to make healthy, pure, nutrient-rich foods and products available to all and to inspire people to eat better, eat less and live longer.” Erewhon does not stock any item that has commonly used preservatives or flavorings in the food industry such as Refined Flour Refined Sugar, Yeast Extract, Corn Syrup, Corn Starch (unless Organic or non-GMO), Soybean Oil (unless Organic or non-GMO), Rapeseed Oil (unless Organic or non-GMO), High Fructose Corn Syrup, Sodium Benzoate Maltodextrin (unless Organic or non-GMO), Monosodium Glutamate, Natural Flavors (unless source is stated and approved), or any Artificial Flavors and Colors. When you visit any of its locations: Calabasas, Los Angeles. Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica, Venice, and Silver Lake (a Studio City location is planned for 2021), you will find that they really hold true to their mission.
Each location is meticulously cared for by its staff. The produce section always looks fresh. Their shelves are well-stocked, and properly aligned. The refrigerated and deli sections that offer mostly organic prepared food are a feast for the eyes, let alone the stomach. What is most impressive, especially at this time when cleanliness is of greater importance, is how clean each location is. A cleaner crew came rushing by within seconds of a customer accidently dropping a glass jar of freshly made soup as he was about to put it from his cart onto the conveyer belt of the cashier. The staff is clearly well-trained, and very well mannered. Kudos for the management team for fostering an atmosphere of caring and courteous staff. In an age where customer service appears to be disappearing, Erewhon stands out in many ways.
The ready-made food section will blow you away…if you’re willing to pay for what you get.
Erewhon truly excels in its prepared food section. Just about every item is made of organic ingredients. Not just one or two ingredients, but usually every ingredient used to cook and prepare the food is organic. The variety of ready-made salads, as well as deli salads and hot plates, will water your mouth. There are many vegetarian and vegan options in addition to chicken, beef, and fish options. The sushi section is very good and very fresh. While Erewhon is a premium supermarket and is more pricey even than Whole Foods market, you do get quality ingredients that are absolutely well-seasoned, balanced, and nutritious. As the proverb says “you get what you pay for.”
You get what you pay for with Erewhon. And then some.
Erewhon offers a yearly membership for $200. That sounds expensive, but when you frequent Erewhon, you’ll be surprised how much you get back. With the membership you get 10% Erewhon points accrual on in-store and online purchases (1 point = $1), 25% off monthly exclusive Members-only brands, Member referral program (refer a friend, get $10 loyalty credit), First access to Erewhon Merchandise, and Erewhon sample box (when available).
Even though Erewhon is priced at a premium, even compared with Whole Food Markets and Gelsons, you do get what you pay for. Erewhon offers mostly organic items, sourced from vendors that adhere to strict rules of production and avoid use of preservatives and artificial flavors. Simply stated, Erewhon offers clean food that will nourish your body and taste buds. Beware that the deli section offers so many amazing choices that your eyes will pop out and you would want to try everything. You can choose individual salads and hot dishes or you can choose a platter in the hot food section at try a few items. Either way, you can’t go wrong, and I promise you that you will want to go back and eat some more. The food is not overly seasoned which is important for those people who have to watch salt intake. After all, you can always add more salt, but not take any away once the dish is served.
Erewhon also offers many freshly made soups in glass jar, each delicious and made with healthy ingredients. Whether you are a vegetarian, vegan, or not, you will have a variety of choices to choose from.
The fresh sushi section offers a variety of choices even for vegetarian and vegans. The fresh rolls, both the vegetarian/vegan option and the one with shrimp, are very fresh and delicious. I would also recommend the rice patties with crab salad topped with fresh avocado. You really can’t go wrong with any of the choices in the sushi section of Erewhon.
Don’t forget the dessert section as well as the amazing assortment of healthy drinks.
The dessert section of Erewhon offers the same quality as the rest of its store. Dessert range from pure organic chocolate pudding to out-of-this world Tiramisu, pies, cookies, and muffins, many that are even vegan and gluten-free. The choices are mind-numbing. You must try the chocolate oatmeal and oatmeal raisin cookies. Even at $2 per cookie, they are heavenly delicious.
The drink choices will make your head spin with many healthy, low sugar choices.
